The earthquake and aftershocks
This post will be kept updated from bottom to top. Related postsNow in English!(unless I forget, but even so it will just be a matter of time before I translate) Things seem to have calmed down quite a bitLet’s see what happens the next few days. Chile is still struggling to get its basic services up’n'running: electricity, gas, water – but more are coming up by the hour. Remember: If you have no phone connection, maybe you have internet, if you don’t have internet, you might have a phone-connection. If not landline, then cellular – or the other way around. Stay in touch with your families around the globe, in Sweden a friend just received good news about his parents. Keep in touch! Death toll: has fortunately been lowered to approximately 450 identified deceased. Aftonbladet – with a semi-bad translation:
CNN footage: This is what it looked like when the quake struck: Current status: Read from the top… Water is being sold at very high prices: $1000/l (pesos, appros 15SEK) and bread goes for around $2000-$2500/kg (30-40SEK). Many towns are without power and water, even though some have telephony services. Some towns/cities are scheduling planned cuts of water and power services – probably to check systems. Where phones don’t work, internet might; tell people to get on the web! Go online! If the internet is down in places, phones might work (e.g. Peñaflor is without power, but phone lines are up). If you have gas piping, check your tubes with a mixture of water and liquid soap. If you see bubbles, cut the gas and avoid open flames! Tsunamis – or sea quakes (maremoto) as they’re known in Chile – have created quite a mess. Waves have washed boats up on city squares, cars aswell; piled up against house walls. Many bridges in the Santiago area have collapsed. People are complaining about the lack of public communication and hailing social media such as Facebook and Twitter. In Santiago there have been fires, amongst them one in some kind of factory. The fire has been spewing noxious and poisoneous fumes and leaving a huge black cloud in the sky. Buildings have cracked, one – in Concepción (60 people missing) - has toppled over completely. Many have lost their facades. Houses made of adobe (a mixture of mud and straw) have all but pulverised. Loads of buildings are going down, either by themselves or by human hand. There is also talk of investigations regarding cheating construction companies; practically new buildings, guaranteed to stand for at least ten years, have gone down. Bridges aswell. Chileans think there’s something rotten going on. Earthquakes and after shocks have been reported from throughout the world: Chile, Argentina, Japan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Indonesia, Greece(!). Meanwhile the tsunami is spreading around the globe with waves reaching 1m in Hawaii, 1,2-1,5m in New Zeeland and 10cm in Japan. Yes, people, we’re metric here! Hospitals in Chile are pleading to people to stay at home and not flood the hospitals. Santiago is talking about 311 beds for injured. In Talca there was a rumour that all patients with breathing-support have died – haven’t found any confirmation on that yet. Roads in the Metropolitana region have been partly open to traffic and the toll booths have actually activelly charged people. Some roads are now completely open and free of charge though. Also looting and gangs of youth (flaites) roaming about. At least 3ppl have been found – say the rumours – dead, by bullets, not by quake. People are obviously guarding their homes and belongings, police are apparently on 24h patrol. 10:00 CET: Believe it or not, El MentirioMercurio still has no news! Body count is up to and above 300, but more than 16000 are missing or otherwise being sought for by relatives, friends and such. 2000000 people affected in one way or another by the quake. 500000 households on the streets. Swedish Radio (SR) talks about “several after shocks” – my family says “there are tremors constantly”. Situation clearing up now, people getting ready for the second wave? There’s no food, stores are closed, people are hungry and Piñera apparently – in the eyes of the public – is doing nothing. Someone shouted “Piñera conchatumadre” at the camera. Which roughly translates to “Piñera, you son of a bitch!”. Let’s continue:In Valpo (Valparaiso) there have been arrests of people shouting false alarms about impending tsunamis on the streets. Still there are aftershocks, not so pronounced now. 2010-03-01: One man has died due to cardiac arrest when fleeing from a supposed falsely alarmed tsunami. There’s a curfew in Concepción due to – amongst other things – looting. Military deploys 1300. Also a larger after shock @ 6,2 richter. Links:
